Mist and Harp batting

Earlier this October I attended my first ever mist and harp batting evening, in the hopes of getting some conservation-in-action shots as well as learning more about these wonderful creatures and the different species we have here in the UK! After setting up a series of different traps, it became a waiting game for the first bats to arrive! Below are some photos and brief explanations of what happened!

This is a bat harp trap- aptly named because the frame supports a range of strings that resemble a a harp. The bats will fly into these strings before dropping down into the canvas section where they can then be safely caught for surveying before release.

A long-eared bat is checked over and sexed before the results are recorded for later analysis!
This was my favourite shot of the evening- Its important that unless otherwise inconvenient the person who checks the bat is also the one who records all the data- hence the bat in one hand and pencil in the other!
