Exploring Wicken Fen- Cambridge Blog

This past weekend I have been away in Cambridge for a family wedding; however, before wedding craziness took over, I managed to visit Wicken Fen (a National Trust nature reserve) with my camera and spend some time checking out the local wildlife it had to offer.

Wicken Fen describes itself as one of Europe’s oldest wetlands with over 9000 different wildlife species within its grounds. It is also home to a Konik ponies and highland cattle which help maintain the habitat and has several wildlife hides along the trails to spot wildlife from.

Now I should preface by saying the day we visited the temperature remained around 1 degree Celsius and it snowed whilst I was there… so its safe to say it wasn’t the best conditions, however, we were still able to spot a few bird species and enjoy the boardwalks and wildlife hides around the area.

Even from our brief (cold) visit it was clear that Wicken Fen was a haven for wildlife species, lots of different bird calls could be heard and the conditions would be perfect for dragonflies and other insects… it was just a shame that the cold weather and snow meant the conditions weren’t that great. However, next time I’m in Cambridge it is definitely worth a second visit!
